Every year, on October 12th, World Arthritis Day (WAD) is held to raise global awareness about rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, often referred to as RMDs. With about 200 of these conditions, some still relatively unknown, this year’s World Arthritis Day is themed “Living With an RMD at all stages of life.” It places a strong emphasis on highlighting patients’ experiences and the progression of these diseases.
To explore the various presentations of RMDs and their impact on patients’ lives, we have carefully selected intriguing cases. Katharina Ziegeler is a distinguished radiologist currently affiliated with Rheumazentrum Ruhrgebiet, Herne, Germany. Her research is centered on advancing our understanding of rheumatic diseases through medical imaging, with a specific emphasis on exploring the impact of anatomical variations and gender-specific differences at the sacroiliac joints. Her work delves into how these variations influence the development and progression of both degenerative and inflammatory diseases. This vital research has profound implications for diagnosing and managing these conditions effectively. Her dedication to this domain is underscored by her postdoctoral thesis.
Additionally, Katharina is actively engaged in the realm of crystal arthropathies, with a particular interest in calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD). Her expertise in applying innovative imaging techniques to crystal arthropathies adds a significant dimension to our understanding of these conditions.
Denis Poddubnyy is a renowned expert in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) who actively explores the possibilities of artificial intelligence (AI) in rheumatology. As the Head of Rheumatology at Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Denis’s expertise extends beyond traditional boundaries.
Denis’s unique perspective comes from his dual role as an axSpA specialist and an AI enthusiast. He brings a practical understanding of AI to the table. With this hands-on experience, his insights are valuable for both clinicians and researchers.
During the event, Denis will explore the exciting intersection of AI and rheumatology, highlighting its potential to transform diagnosis and treatment.
We are delighted to have Marlena Jbara join our event. She is an experienced MSK specialist from Florida, with a focus on foot disorders. Marlena’s expertise extends to diabetes-related arthritis, specifically Neurogenic Arthropathy or Charcot Joint — that proves the importance of proactive management. Only in this manner, it is possible to prevent this form of diabetes-related arthritis.
Her lifelong dedication to medical education has empowered healthcare professionals, including podiatrists, foot and ankle surgeons, and radiology, podiatry, orthopedic, and emergency medicine residents. Through her work, they learn to utilize imaging for patient care.
